HOW IS INTERNET EMAIL INTERCEPTED?
It’s a bit complicated but here is an arm-chair answer. Armed with some technical knowledge, a potential data thief has little difficulty in capturing sensitive data traversing the Internet. The thief could easily find out about pending litigation from public court documents and dockets. With knowledge of the law firm and the client, the thief can send email, or use easily obtained computer software, to determine the IP address of both the client’s email router and the firm’s email router. Remember that IP header information can never be encrypted; to do so would make it unintelligible to the email routers that cannot unencrypt email.
