How is immersion different or better than a traditional elementary world language program?

Elementary World Language programs usually appear as 30-90 minutes of Foreign Language instruction per week. These are usually termed FLES/FLEX programs. Students from FLES/FLEX programs get a great introduction to a language, but must begin as first year language students once they get to a traditional secondary program. In contrast, Immersion students graduate as proficient speakers of two languages; any traditional secondary class in the immersion language would be too easy for them. This gives them the opportunity to begin to learn a third language.
