How is hydrogen bought and sold today?
In smaller quantities, hydrogen is often bought and sold in cylinders, which allows it to be easily transported as a compressed gas between where it is produced and where it is used. These cylinders are most commonly made of steel and come in a variety of sizes that hold different amounts of hydrogen at different pressures. Two of the most common sizes are the “K” (or “200”) cylinder and the “T” (or “300”) cylinder. See the tables and images below for specifications on each cylinder size and common purchasing quantities for cylinders. For larger quantities (20,000+ scf), a tube trailer (compressed hydrogen) or liquid tanker truck (liquid hydrogen) is more likely to be used for delivery. Tube trailer quantities range from 45,000 scf (for a “pup trailer”) to 125,000 scf for the large trailers. A common size in the middle is 70,000 scf. Liquid truck capacities range from about 1,000,000 to 1,800,000 scf. Notes Water capacity is the amount of water the cylinder could hold if filled with wa
