How is glucose tolerance test useful clinically?
In general, GTTs are not used to clinically diagnose diabetes. However, it is useful to see how the patient responds to a glucose challenge. Previously, a 2 hour glucose load of >= 200mg/dL (10mM) after GTT (75g of glucose) was considered diagnostic of diabetes. It can also help determine whether the patient’s response is normal, impaired (IGT), or frankly diabetic. 4. How do you recognize renal glycosuria? A urinalysis will show the presence of glucose in the urine. In general, there should be no glucose in the urine at all, as it is usually completely reabsorbed. Only if serum glucose levels go above the renal threshold (usually over 160mg/dL) will it start showing up in the urine. 5. What kidney lesions are associated with diabetes mellitus? The kidneys are prime targets of diabetes, and renal failure is second only to myocardial infarction as a cause of death from this disease. Three important lesions are encountered: • Glomerular lesions: glomerular capillary basement membranes ar
