How is Furman working to decrease water usage on campus?
Efforts to reduce Furman’s water use are ongoing. Recently, more efficient appliances and water flow restrictors have been installed around campus to facilitate water conservation. Low flow shower aerators and sink aerators have been installed in about 75% of the dormitories and other buildings as part of a 4-year project. Also ongoing are efforts to reduce the use of water for landscaping and grounds maintenance. The fountains that are a distinctive feature of the university are an example of our more sustainable water management practices. The fountains have recently been moved from a 24-hour operating schedule to an 8-hour operating schedule. This change is generating savings of approximately $45,000 in reduced energy costs. Additionally, water use and costs have decreased due to decreases in water loss through evaporation. Also, we are in the process of upgrading the university’s irrigation system to increase efficiency and performance. Currently, approximately 30% of the water use
