There are currently two main types of solar panels – solar panels that generate electricity and solar panels that heat water. Solar panels consist of photovoltaic (PV) cells which are made from one or two layers of semi-conducting material such as silicon. When sunlight shines on the cells it creates an electric field across the layers. The amount of energy that the cells can generate in full sunlight is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp).
