How is fluoride made and what chemicals are used?
Fluoride occurs naturally in water supplies as a result of having been dissolved out of the rocks and soils over which the water has travelled. The fluoride compound used for water fluoridation is a by-product of the manufacture of phosphate fertilisers and is specifically manufactured to specific quality standards. Drinking water safety is taken very seriously in the UK and fluoride adjustment is carried out in accordance with the UK Code of Practice.
