How is Fine Zoom different from Digital Zoom?
Both FINE ZOOM and DIGITAL ZOOM are technologies that effectively extend the maximum magnification of a digital cameras optical telephoto zoom. Optical telephoto zoom is limited by the length of a cameras lens barrel. At a certain point, the lens cannot be moved any closer to the subject. Image enlargement beyond this point requires digital magnification. For each multiple of magnification accomplished by DIGITAL ZOOM, the captured image is enlarged by 150%, centered, and then cropped to its original dimensions. This gives the appearance of bringing the center 50% of the original image nearer to the viewer. Because the visual information from the border of the original image is discarded, the image loses 50% of its resolution with each enlargement. In order to restore the image to its original dimensions, the camera must replace the visual information from the discarded pixels with new visual information constructed from the pixels it has retained. This process, called digital interpol
