• Answer: Dr. Shealy has found that surface ablation is absolutely necessary in the treatment of farsightedness when a patient desires the least invasiveness. Intraocular implants may not be centered in the pupil so that when you make a cap, with either a laser or bladed keratome, decentration off the visual axis may occur. The decentration of the cap or flap can be avoided with the use of surface ablation and the area of treatment can be centered nicely along the visual axis which is tracked by the Allegretto Wave eye tracker. Our results have been spectacular and patients can practice monovision by having the non-dominant eye predictably overcorrected, making the patients independent of reading glasses or bifocals 90 to 95% of the time. The Allegretto Wave Laser corrects up to 6 diopters of farsightedness with 6 diopters of astigmatism.
