How is Extended Day Kindergarten set up?
Students who participate in Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK) attend their regular kindergarten class for one half of the day and EDK the other half of the day. The EDK class focuses on literacy learning. Student are taught by a specially trained literacy teacher and an assistant and work primarily in small groups to acquire the necessary literacy skills to be successful in the regular classroom. Students’ literacy skills are re-evaluated at the end of the first semester to determine if they need to continue to receive the extra literacy support provided by EDK. Students who no longer need the support begin attending their regular kindergarten class and no longer attend the full day. Students who need the continued support remain in EDK. New students who had not participated in EDK the first half of the year may begin attending at this time.
