How is energy from coal used?

0

Coal is primarily used for electricity production, by burning to heat water to steam to turn turbines to generate electricity. Coal is also converted to coke and used in steel making. Some parts of the world still use coal for cooking and heating where they simply burn it in their home stoves or even open fires.15 years ago, Beijing China turned black in the winter because most people heated and cooked over open coal fires. There has been work to develop coal gasification but I don’t think that has proven finanically viable (but I could be wrong now that oil is so expensive).
