How is each United Way governed?
Each United Way is an autonomous organization operated by a voluntary Board of Directors chosen from the community it serves which governs decision-making. In addition, each United Way has a small paid staff that runs the organization. The size of the staff can vary greatly depending on the organization. Typically, United Ways serving more populated areas tend to have more staff members. A few United Ways are run entirely by volunteers. The head of each United Way is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This individual is a paid staff member and reports directly to the Board of Directors. Also, United Ways rely upon volunteers from their community for a variety of purposes.
