How is DYT connected to camping at Hornby Island???
The Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre is managed by Gord Campbell, who has a deaf child. Gord has worked with Deaf Youth Today in beginning a training program for young deaf teens/adults. Each year, the Deaf Youth Today staff spend almost a week of training with the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education staff (along with interpreters). After their week of training, they work during the Deaf Family Camp (for deaf and h/h children and their parents). They, then stay on, to be counselors for a Deaf Youth Today 5 Day Residential Camp. Because Gord has a deaf son, he feels strongly about empowering deaf teens, and teaching them to become future leaders. His personal philosophy, and that of the Outdoor Education Centre, was a great fit for DYT.
