How is Down syndrome treated?
No cure exists for Down syndrome. But physical therapy and/or speech therapy can help people with the disorder develop more normally. Screening for common medical problems associated with the disorder, followed by corrective surgery, can often improve quality of life. Moreover, enriched environments significantly increase their capacity to learn and lead a meaningful life.
There is no cure for Down syndrome. Treatment includes helping and encouraging your child use his abilities to the highest level. You may have your child see different caregivers, including specialists that may help his growth and development. You may place him in a special program or school. Treating and controlling other health problems are also important. Your child may have one or more of the following: • Aiding devices: These may include hearing aids, respirators, and oxygen. • Medicines: Your child may need medicines to treat heart problems, control seizures (convulsions) or fight infections. • Therapies: These may include physical, occupational, and speech therapy. A physical therapist helps your child with special exercises. These exercises help make his bones and muscles stronger. Unfortunately there is no cure for Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome usually have some sort of mental retardation and learning problems, such as speech problems and physical motion, and thus need special education and environments that are friendly and helpful to their learning. Plastic surgery can also benefit people with Down syndrome who have facial or physical abnormalities with the idea of creating a more normal facial appearance, which will allow them to fit in with other people with confidence, and thus lead a better quality of life.
