How is cutting yourself an addiction?

Cutting is an addiction. Whether you want to believe it or not, it is. People might say, "It’s just a bad behavior. You can stop at anytime." You know which people say that? People who never have or didn’t get deeply into it. I myself am trying to quit. I have been working on it since last year. I went 4 months without doing it and that is my record. I just did it again though. It is really hard to quit. There are other things you can do to keep yourself from cutting.

1. Do something with your hands. Start texting a ton of people at once, play with some play-doh, draw, write, get on the computer. Anything to keep your hands busy. You can’t cut if your hands are busy.

2. Call a friend. Your true friends will love and care about you no matter what. And if none of them know, you should tell the one who you know will not yell at you, get mad, and know you can trust. Talking to a friend when you feel like cutting takes your mind off of it.

3. Sit and listen to music. STAY AWAY FROM ALL SHARP OBJECTS!! Music can be very calming and relaxing.

4. Go do something active. Go for a run, walk, bike ride, rollar blade, anything that will get your endorphins going.

(These are just some ideas. Do what works for you that doesn’t involve harming yourself.)

What really helped me was getting a counselor. I know it sounds dumb and rediculous but it acutualy does help. But it ONLY helps if YOU want it to work. The counselor I had was really nice. He treated me like a person and listened. When finding a conselor, find one that is right for you. I personally purfure male counselors because I don’t trust women very much. And talking to someone of the opposite sex is not wrong or a bad thing. It all depends on what you are comfortable with. Don’t let anyone force you into it. If you do, you will hate it, it won’t work, and it will be a waste of your time, their time, and money.

Cutting is hard to quit. People who try to quit cutting relapse about 8 times. And it doesn’t mean you can’t quit if you go over 8. IT IS JUST AN ESTEMATION. Some people take longer than others to quit. Just keep trying. If you put your mind to it you can stop. It will take a while, but it will work out in the end.

If you feel like you want to kill yourself GO GET HELP! It doesn’t matter anymore what people say or think. Get your butt to a conselor and if bad enough a hospital. Do not care about what others will think or say. Your life is more important.

She’s probably struggling with a lot of things. Cutting IS an addiction. First off you have to understand that pain is addictive. You can get high off of pain. Cutting relieves emotional pain. If you have a constant feeling of hopelessness and cutting has relieved it once you want more and more of that relief. I cut. I’ve said to myself I’d quit about three times, but I can’t. You’re friend is right. It’s definitely an addiction. It’s hard to quit something when it’s helping you. Like if you had started to play guitar. It made you feel better when you were upset. Then one day you have a really bad day. You want to play guitar because it makes you happier, right? Well, you get in a fight with your parents. They take it away. Now you have nothing, and it kills, right? Sometimes it’s easier for people to understand sh as an addiction if you describe it with an activity other people understand.
