Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that have different boiling points. Fractional distillation uses these differences to separate the hydrocarbons. The lightest fraction is liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is used as bottled gas. The heaviest fraction is bitumen, which is used to tar roads.
