How is Craftys performance on the Macintosh compared to other platforms?
Although Crafty is a relatively strong Macintosh chess program, it could be performing much better. Crafty is essentially an elaborate 64-bit calculator. On other 32-bit platforms, 64-bit support is provided by the gcc compiler. On the Macintosh, 64-bit support is provided by a C++ class. The C++ class is much slower than gcc’s built-in data type. Better performance is a high priority. Currently, several compilers are being investigated as possible alternatives.
