How is council tax benefit paid?
Council tax benefit is paid directly to your council tax account. Unlike housing benefit, which is paid on a weekly basis, council tax benefit is paid for the full financial year. So, if your circumstances change part-way through the year, your council tax bill will be amended for the remainder of the year, based on your new entitlement.
If you qualify for benefit you will be issued with a revised council tax bill to take account of the benefit that you have been awarded. This will show any revised instalment plan available to you. If you have already paid your council tax bill for the full year then we will arrange for a refund to be made to you for the amount of any credit on your council tax account. You can access the benefits calculator by using the link on the right to see whether you would be eligible for council tax or any other benefits based on your circumstances.
