How is cost determined for each rug type?
The cost for each rug created through Bunyaad, our artisan group in Pakistan, is determined by how much labor is needed from spinning the wool to tying the knots to the final finishing process. Bunyaad offers a large selection of rug types each with their own unique characteristics and work processes. • Wool which is hand-spun on a drop spindle takes much longer to prepare than machine-spun wool. • Using hand-gathered natural dyes is also more labor intensive than using synthetic dyes which are readily available. • The intricacy of each design, thickness of yarn and knots needed to accomplish the design also need to be considered when determining the cost for each rug. Here is a simple breakdown of the work involved to finish a Persian and Tribal Chobi Natural Dye. Both rugs take about the same amount of time to finish and therefore have a similar end-cost.
