How is conjunctivitis treated?
A. The first thing we do is determine the cause of the conjunctivitis. If it is bacterial, we will often prescribe antibiotics. Because drugs cannot treat viral conjunctivitis, it will have to pretty much run its course. However, cool compresses and over-the-counter artificial tears or lubricants can be used very frequently to relieve the symptoms. If the cause is allergies, we typically prescribe antihistamine drops.
