How is coaching different from counseling or psychotherapy?
Coaching takes a positive, growth-oriented approach toward change, while counseling or therapy usually emphasizes healing problems that originated in the past. In coaching, you are seen as whole, resourceful, and well. The coach is your partner, rather than an “expert” who advises you or tells you what to do. Coaching can include addressing fears, examining self-imposed limitations, and releasing roadblocks. But the focus is always on taking action and moving forward toward your goals rather than dwelling in the past. You’ll be encouraged to live in the present as you create your future. The purpose of career coaching is for you to make the most of your strengths and find work that fulfills rather than simply taking a job to match skills you may or may not want to use.
