How is coaching different from consulting and therapy?
Answer A consultant is hired to assess the situation, isolate problems, and come up with solutions and a game plan to resolve the situation – sometimes implementing the solutions or submitting a report outlining recommendations. Basically therapy sessions are centered around looking back and identifying (and often reliving) negative events from the past that explain current problems; then working on reducing the negative impact of those past events on your life today. Coaching is about focusing on what you want your life to ‘look like’ in the future; and the steps you need to take today to get there. It’s a collaboration. We work as a team to come up with the solutions, design the steps, and follow through.
