How is clear cutting a economically profitable method of forestry??????
It is very easy to simply mark of a piece of land, and cut everything. There are special machines that grab the tree, cut the bottom, lay it down, and continue on. Not labour intensive at all, very fast and efficient. The traditional way involves people going into the forest, selecting with trees to cut, and then carefully cutting them so as to not hit the others. You then have to get them out somehow, again, without damaging others. This increases costs dramatically. However, clear cutting only works well in places where trees grow very quickly. The BC coast is where a tree can go from a seedling, to marketable size in about 40 years. Other places, it takes 70 or 80 or more. In the Brazilian rain forest, trees grow in about 20 years, so it makes even more sense there. However, there is a balance. Many people hate even the sound of the words “clear cutting.” It has to be done in areas not seen by the general public. This means, remote valleys, or places where a screen of trees is left
