How is Brucellosis Detected in Animals?
There are several tests to indicate the presence of Brucellosis. In cattle herds, the Brucellosis Ring Test (BRT) is used. The BRT is done by collecting milk or cream from each cow and killed Brucella organisms are added to the milk. If the milk is infected, a bluish ring will form around the cream line as the cream rises. Cattle are also tested when they are sent to market. Blood samples are taken and tested for Brucellosis. There are also several other tests including, blood agglutination, the Brucellosis Card Test, and a number of supplemental tests based on various characteristics of antibodies found in the blood and milk of infected animals.
