How is bleomycin treatment performed?
The procedure is performed as a day case, and you/your child can leave the hospital a few hours after the procedure if all is well. A response to the injection is usually only seen after the second or third injection. Children undergoing treatment are admitted on the paediatric surgical day unit on the morning of the treatment. The unit is specifically designed to provide a comfortable and re-assuring environment during the time you spend with us. You or your spouse/partner can accompany your child to the theatre. Adult patients are either admitted on ward 35, (the plastic surgery ward), or the surgical day unit. You will be given a direct contact number to ring should you have any concerns after you have been discharged. A series of injections is usually needed, (4 on average), although this varies according to the size of the lesion. The time period between treatments is usually 3-4 weeks.
