How is APHA governed, staffed and funded?
The Association is governed by a voluntary board elected by the membership. The membership gives direction for the board to act on their behalf regarding specific health issues through various means including resolutions submitted and passed by members at the annual general meeting, membership surveys and individual contact. Members with a public health issue or concern are encouraged to contact APHA for information or assistance on the process of bringing issues forward to the board, committees or the general membership. A part-time executive director is contracted by the board to provide program, committee, member, board and administrative support to the Association. APHA relies largely on volunteers to achieve its mission although sometimes specified program grants provide funding to contract additional staff to carry out short-term projects.
