This chemical is commonly used for agricultural purposes, making the Illinois farmer a target for anhydrous ammonia thefts. Illinois lawmakers have taken steps in response to the threat the drug poses for the agricultural community: Tampering or attempting to tamper with anhydruos ammonia equipment, containers or storage facilites is, at a minimum, a Class 4 felony with a possible $25,000 fine and a sentence of 1-3 years in prison. It is a Class 4 Felony to transport anhydrous ammonia in a portable container that is not approved by the Department of Transportation, punishable by up to 3 years in jail.
