Thus, labels and MSDS’ follow many different formats and there can be no side-by-side comparison made between the information placed on the MSDS versus a label. To gain more insight, however, review the following excerpt from a July 25, 1991 letter from Patricia K. Clark, Director, Directorate of Compliance Programs at OSHA:”A material safety data sheet is not an “appropriate hazard warning”; the purpose of a label under the HCS is to serve as an immediate visual warning of the hazards associated with the chemical.
