How is an arm fracture treated?
Treatment will depend on which arm bone was broken and the kind of fracture your child has. Your child may need one or more of the following: • Cast or splint: Keeping the broken arm from moving is very important. A splint or cast may be put on to hold the broken bones together. A sling may be used to hold the arm with a bandage to strap it close to the body. This may help decrease pain and prevent further damage to the broken bones. • Medicine: Medicines may be given to help with your child’s pain. Your child may need antibiotic medicine or a tetanus shot if he has a break in his skin. Medicine to help your child to be calm and relaxed may also be given. • Supportive therapy: Ice packs may be put on your child’s arm to decrease swelling, pain, and redness. Physical therapy may be needed once swelling and pain are gone. A physical therapist may assist your child with special exercises.
