How is aluminium ore converted into aluminium metal?
The bauxite is is put in cells or pots which have a voltage of around 40 volts DC across each one and thousands of amps passed through it. The ore is reduced and the oxygen given off into the atmosphere. The metal is syphoned from the cell as more bauxite is added to give a continuous process. Each pot is connected in series to another pot to make a pot line of around 25 or so cells.
