How is Age-related Macular Degeneration treated?
Treatment varies, depending on the stage of macula degeneration. In early, or dry, macular degeneration, management is directed to reducing any controllable risk factors and monitoring for any sign of progression into wet macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses and a brimmed hat when outdoors to protect from UV light may be helpful, as is a diet high in fruits and green leafy vegetables. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) demonstrated a beneficial effect of a combination of supplements that are readily available in several commercial supplements. Patients should also monitor their vision with an Amsler grid chart on a frequent basis.
