How is acne formed?
Acne forms under your skin 2-3 weeks before you even see it on top of your skin. Deep within each hair follicle, your sebaceous glands work to produce sebum (oil) which acts as your skin’s natural moisturiser. As your skin renews itself the old cells die, mix with sebum and get sloughed off making way for fresh new skin cells. But when the old cells don’t shed evenly and your sebaceous glands produce excess oil, the dead cells trap the oil and bacteria inside the hair follicle which becomes inflamed and develops into a pimple. What is acne? When the mixture of oil and dead cells are exposed to air, it turns black. If bacteria is present, a blackhead can become inflamed and develop into a red pimple. If the pimple becomes infected, it develops into a whitehead which can burst and scar the skin. And the most serious of all is a cyst – red, pus-filled, painful and extends deep into the skin.
