How is abnormal uterine bleeding treated?
Treatment options are determined based on the cause of the abnormal bleeding. Some treatments include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, and others) which can help to reduce bleeding and pain. If the cause is a hormone imbalance your doctor may suggest you take birth control pills or progesterone. If the bleeding is related to hormone replacement therapy your doctor may adjust your prescription. If the abnormal uterine bleeding is due to fibroids (non-cancerous or benign tumours that can grow in the uterus) a procedure known as the Uterine Embolization procedure is a possible treatment option for you. This procedure is done in the X-ray department and involves the insertion of a small catheter into the uterine blood vessel (which nourishes the fibroids) and the delivery of agents that block off these blood vessels. By blocking off these uterine blood vessels the fibroids will not receive blood supply and shrink in about six weeks. For more i
