How is a voiding cystourethrogram done?
• We will take you and your child to an exam room. Your child will put on the hospital gown. • Your child will lie on a table. There will also be a large camera hooked to a television screen. • An X-ray may be taken of your child’s abdomen. • We will wash and dry the area between your child’s legs (genital area), and insert a catheter (a soft, flexible tube) a short way into the bladder. • A liquid will flow through the catheter into your child’s bladder. When the bladder fills, he/she will feel the urge to urinate. When your child cannot hold any more liquid, X-rays will be taken. • After the X-rays are taken, your child will be asked to urinate into towels while lying down. As he/she is urinating, the catheter will slip out. It is so important for your child to remain still during the test, so the pictures are as clear as possible. • We will take a few more X-rays. This test takes about 30 minutes. • A doctor trained in reading X-rays will study the pictures and send the results to y
