How is a VLEP calculated ?
Occupational Exposure Limits for hydrocarbon solvents Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) are a key element of industrial hygiene practices. For the majority of oxygenated solvents, which are largely single component materials, OELs have been established by regulatory authorities. For hydrocarbon solvents this is not generally the case. Although some countries do have systems for establishing OELs for hydrocarbon solvents (e.g. UK, Germany), typically OELs are only available for single components (e.g. heptane). As a result there is no harmonised approach to setting OELs for hydrocarbon solvents, with the resulting potential for confusion due to different approaches being taken by different solvent suppliers or between different countries. The Reciprocal Calculation Procedure (RCP) Many hydrocarbon solvents are complex mixtures and as a result it has been a challenging task to develop a system which covers all relevant products and is at the same time simple and practical to use.
