How is a State Forest different from a State Park?
State Forests were established as working forests to be managed by the Virginia Department of Forestry. State Forests are managed for multiple uses: wildlife habitat, water and air quality, recreation, scenic beauty, forest products, research and demonstration, and education. The forests receive no taxpayer funding but are self-sustaining. They get their funding through forest management activities, and they return 25% of their revenue to the counties in which they are located.
