How Is a Sonogram Performed?
The Technology A sonogram, or ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to scan a woman’s abdomen and pelvic cavity to create a picture of the baby inside, very similar to the way bats use sound waves to “see” their way in the dark. There are seven types of sonograms and it is important to understand their differences because while the processes behind all seven are basically the same, they all have different functions. The seven types of sonograms are: 1) Transvaginal Scans. These sonograms are used inside the vagina and are generally used early in the pregnancy. 2) Standard Ultrasound. This is a traditional ultrasound that uses a transducer, a device that converts echoed sound waves into images, over the abdomen to produce a picture of the baby. 3) Advanced Ultrasound.
