How is a sexual assault crime handled?
If a sexual assault is reported to the police department, we will respond with an officer to interview and take a report. We will also transport the survivor to a hospital or SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) treatment center as needed. As with any other reported crime, the report will be forwarded to Investigations for follow-up. Depending on the circumstances, a Detective may respond to the scene as needed. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office if there is a prosecutable crime.
