How is a Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction different from a Purchase transaction with my Visa Debit Card?

• Point-of-Sale (POS) retail transactions can be made at locations that display the Cirrus, PLUS or STAR logos. POS terminals can be found in most grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, and many retail outlets. POS transactions are processed as debit transactions through the POS network and you are required to enter your PIN. Purchase transactions (or non-PIN transactions) can be made anywhere the VISA logo is displayed. Purchase transactions are processed as credit transactions though the VISA network and you will be require to sign a receipt. The transaction will still debit your checking account the exact same way. So if the POS system is down, you may be able to complete your transaction through the Visa system because it’s a separate network.
