How is a Fracture Treated?
The first step in treatment is to reduce the fracture, which means to put the bone back together and make sure everything is in its proper place so that the bone will heal properly. If the bone is shattered (a comminuted fracture) or is not expected to heal properly without added support (such as a steel rod or plate), surgery may be in order to allow proper alignment and healing of the bone. Once the fracture is reduced, your orthopedist may apply a plaster cast, a splint or a brace to ensure that the bones stay in place while healing. Once the bone is healed and you can begin to use it again, your orthopedist may prescribe physical therapy to rebuild muscles that have been out of use.
