How is a criminal records search different from a background check?
A criminal records search and a background check are very similar, but a background check is usually more comprehensive than a criminal background check. A criminal records search is simply a search for criminal records for an individual. In order to perform a criminal records search, most services will search court records from Civil Courts, Criminal Courts, and other courts, such as a state, or juvenile court. A background check, however, often contains personal information about a person as well as information about their criminal courts records. For example, a background check might contain information about marriages, divorces, property ownership, and genealogy in addition to information about criminal records.
