How important was that in the history of wrestling?
JH: In Memphis, I’d manage three or four people and take my bumps like everybody else. Probably put the window cards up and set the ring up too. When Vince called me and I left Memphis to go to New York, that was the thing I really wanted. I wanted to stay at ringside because that’s what I was used to and I didn’t mind taking the bumps. At the time they had some great managers there: Classy Freddy Blassie, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and also Mr. Fuji. Bobby did go to the ring quite a bit but I wanted to do the same thing. I didn’t mind being at ringside with him. So Vince granted my wish and it really helped me because I was always able to dress real colorful for my guys and I loved being involved.
