How important is the issue of latency for those involved developing desktop virtualization solutions?

This was selected as Best Answer I think one overcomes the latency issue by providing a true desktop virtualization service. I virtualized my desktop about 4 years ago. I created a XP VMware image that I used as my desktop on my company supplied laptop. I could backup the image to disk, remotely access it via remote desktop, and copy it to a remote drive so that I could start it on any system running VMware. When I left my company, I left with my complete desktop and all files in that VMware image while I returned the physical laptop with a near vanilla OS installation. When I started to work at a site where my personal laptop was not allowed, I was able to use a remote desktop connection to my VMware session running in my home LAN and access all my applications including access to my personal instant messaging accounts, twitter, and Facebook.
