How important is racism in the play “Othello”?

I don’t think that Othello’s skin colour plays a big role in the play. Sure there are some references to his skin colour, but i believe that Iago’s treatment is brought on by his envy of what Othello has. This can also been seen in Iago’s feeling towards Cassio. Iago is jealous of Cassio’s position in the military because he didn’t get the position. Iago is just envious of the things others have that he doesn’t. (i.e. Desdemona is prettier than his wife Emilia).
