How important is non-verbal communication?
Maintaining eye contact, obviously, is important. When you are really listening, they can see it in your eyes. Touching a hand, if the person is a touchy person. Asking if you can give them a hug asking is particularly important after surgery. I can remember needing a hug, but I was so sore. What about just being in the room without speaking? That is such a great gift, especially if someone is really ill or just post-surgery and they don’t have the energy for a conversation. It’s very hard for most of us, but just being there is so important. Click here for more tips from Hope’s book.
