How important is Mexico for Apotex, a world leader in the generics?
Mexico was the first Apotex operation established outside Canada. Today we are the 3rd largest operation for the company after Canada and the US. The US is a younger operation but, given the size of the market, it rapidly became a large business. Apotex gave its first steps into the Mexican market in 1993 when it bought 10% of the shares of Protein, a local lab. In 1996 Apotex became the owner of 100% of Protein’s shares. At that time there was no regulatory or legal framework to commercialize generics, so at the beginning we had to disguise them to comply with the laws that were in place at that time. What we would do was to put the trademark so small that it was almost impossible to read it and then write the generic name below it.
