Humankind has been in expansion for ever. Someday, we will expand into space. The Moon and Mars are the most likely first candidates. We have a long way to go before technology will allow us to do that, but it will require humans to actually go to the Moon (again) and Mars. There is only so much robots and remotely controlled vehicles can do. The transmission time between Earh and Mars makes realtime control impossible, and automated machines have limited judgement and capability. We will need the resources on the Moon and Mars one day, and then the space to expand as the human population continues to grow. But short term, the goal of going to Mars spurs science and technology advancement which can be used here on Earth. I hope this helps.
