How important is a college degree in acting?
I think sometimes an undergrad degree in acting can be very dangerous. Especially at a conservatory, the education can be close-minded and will only focus on “acting” when the truth of the matter is that being educated in history, English, and social studies IN ADDITION to good acting training, will make you a better, deeper, more interesting actor. How are you supposed to play a WWII soldier if you know nothing about WWII? How can you play the role of a scientist if you know nothing of the sciences? Things like that. When I was a teenager, I did a summer acting program at NYU and one of our lecturers was Tony Kushner. He hadn’t achieved the success or acclaim he has today – but he was definitely on his way. But lectured us for 1 hour about not going to college for acting. Go for history or English or social studies. But not acting.
