How important are community services to college admissions?
Important. As a former college admissions counselor, I can tell you that community service is definitely a positive addition to your college application. Performing community service shows the admissions counselor that you are well-rounded. Not only did you take the regular course load, you also volunteered for something above and beyond what was required of you. It does not have to pertain to any specific major or degree because you may change your mind on your major many times in the college process. By volunteering for community service you show that you have developed certain skills: social, humanitarian, altruistic, caring, care-taking, and open-minded, among others. So if you are able to, go volunteer at a soup kitchen, shelter, hospital, school. It will look wonderful on your college applications, but better than that, you will feel great that you helped someone else.
COmmunity Service looks really good, but it should be related to what you want to major in. If you volunteer at a hospital but want to major in business the college isn’t going to look twice at the community service, but if you want to become a doctor it looks great. When your looking for a summer job, try to find one that does community service. There are some that do alot. Community service can also help teach you about the career it involves so if you do something related to your future major it’ll help you in the long run.
