Calf muscles are involved in the movement you make when you stand on your toes or point your toes down. So any exercise where you do that against resistance will build up your calves. These include standing (running, jumping) on your toes or pushing against something with your toes. Also, women who wear high heels are using their calf muscles a lot to maintain that position, so often it makes it harder for them to wear boots. (I just had a conversation with a woman about this today.) So if you want, you can increase your calf muscles by walking in high heel shoes.
